A personal reading of an universal speech. For family and technical reasons I followed Obama 's speech in front of the television screen.
5 months agoHe was a dominant presence on TV and I do not think that Egyptians from my own generation have ever experienced anything similar to that.
We've never listened to a speech this balanced and focused with such depth to it.
Obama addressed the Islamic world and did not turn a blind eye to their mindsets.
He recognized the specificity of their culture and their rich history as well as speaking about the state of affairs in the Middle East at present which should be better.
He was smart when he quoted from the Koran and when he talked about the Palestinians.
I've never ever heard in my life a political speech written with such precision. His talk about dialogue inspired me on a personal level.
I liked Obama's talk about how he rejects oppression and torture.
I also thought a lot about his talk on democracy and how there is not only one type of model.
Isn't democracy to live in a society that does not oppress the opposition, where there is respect for human rights and values? I think so - thanks Obama!

Obama's speech in cairo was realy obvious and a clear-cut evidence that he wants a new begning, a new era of US-Arab relations. the president was honest, frank. He do believe that the palestinians have a right to exist but at the same time never forgot the Israelis like right. He said it openly, US-Israeli bond is 'unbreakable', however he will strive for a two satate solution, I guess he is fair enough. What happened to the Egyptians? Everyone is talking about Obama and his speech. Millions of Egyptians listened with open eyes and hearts to the new global leader and they expected a lot from the speech. Nothing makes me worried like the high expectation from anybody. The speech surprised me. He covered everything and all the problematic points, He quoted from Quran 3 times, he took off his shoes when he entered the mosque, he talked about dialogue and understanding .... Cairo, Our old city was empty and clean. I really hope that Obama can visit us every Sunday to have a clean and organized city for the rest of the week. In my opinion the problem with Barack Obama is that he is a man of conformity that does not want to anger either the Arab or the Israeli side. He began his speech with words couched in Qur'anic verses speaking about Islam and its culture. At the same time he did not want to anger the Israelis. This is absolute stupidity. In these major crises and difficult times you need, as a man in an important position, to take decisive decisions.. to hold dialogue with the Islamists.. to support democracy. However consolidating the status quo and his lack of support for democracy and human rights in his speech reveals two important things: he will not put pressure on the Arab rulers for the sake of these issues because he does not want to give himself a headache with problems that he cannot cope with. It is further evidence that the US and the world order is at its most vulnerable when they forsake human values, and supporting the Palestinian resistance and the advocates of democracy in the Middle East....
5 months agoWith regard to nuclear weapons, I do not know whether Obama speaks rationally about nuclear weapons! Israel possesses the largest arsenal of nuclear weapons in the Middle East and perhaps of the largest nations - has Obama forgotton that?
When Obama made reference to and recited the Quranic verses, it was comical! He chose the Quranic verses that were fitting to his speech. There are also in the Holy Quran verses that call for resistance. This selectivity is unnaceptable.
What he said about Hamas at the outset lacked knowledge. Hamas does not receive support from some of the Palestinians, as he claims, but from the majority who chose them and made them the majority in the Palestinian government! But the US goverment and moderate Arab governments which agree with Washington have not recognized this government up till now.
Despite what Mr Obama said in his speech about democratic values, he thinks that it does not apply to the Palestine situation!
His speaks about peaceful civil resistance as a suggestion for the Palestinian situation such as what happened with the black people. A student in the first grade would not be able to believe his ears!
Mr. Obama, do you see the war crimes that were committed in Gaza by the Israelis? Did you see the internationally-banned weapons, the effects of which are still felt today in the Gaza Strip .
I think he witnessed that but surrendered to the pressures of the Israeli lobby which made him overlook that!
Barack Obama believes that his words will change the whole world. This is incorrect. It will not change anything. They are not effective. Your words do not force the Arab regimes to respect human rights and they are contrary to the values of your electoral program....
Lastly:
I think that Obama's speech was only constructive in the sense that it was some expressions only and talk. But in regards to a change in the Arab world, I think that he has to ignore foreign international pressure for democracy in the Arab world. Activists must realise that they have to bring about a change by themselves with their own people. They should not wait for Obama or his successor.
Obama erred with the titles of his speech and also made a mistake with his words which will sow more seeds of frustration in the Arab and Islamic world.

I disagree with your assessment that he played it safe and conformed to what was expected of him. I thought his speech was bold and honest, even when it would've been easier to shy away from the truth. He admitted absolute commitment to Israel (not a safe statement to make in a speech to the Muslim/Arabic world). Although I do agree that he didn't speak enough about Israeli aggression against Palestinians, I thought overall it was a very balanced speech.
5 months agoAnd I thought the selective Quran quotes were a clever way to highlight that Islam doesn't necessarily preach violence and intolerance. Just as he chose his verses very carefully, so do Muslim extremists who defend their unjustifiable actions with verses of intolerance and resistance.

U.S. President Barack Obama's visit kept the Egyptian people in the street and public opinion occupied, even the Egyptians working overseas who followed the historic speech of the U.S. President. They were divided in their opinions while they watched Obama's speech being broadcasted from Egypt to the Islamic world by the news agencies. While some felt proud of it, for many of the workers, farmers and drivers the whole event was only briefly considered. Some reacted with meaningful questions like what sort of economic returns the Egyptian people would gain from this speech and would it contribute to bringing back the Egyptian expat workers to their homeland. These were their statements given to Meedan’s website that interviewed Egyptian expats working in Saudi Arabia about Obama's visit and speech and conveyed their views.
The U.S. changes its tone towards Muslims
Many expat Egyptians spoke about the speech. Some said that this speech showed that the U.S. had changed its tone and attempted, by adopting Islamic discourse, to win the friendship of Arabs and Muslims. Koranic references and verses were the direction of the speech. America has changed its method of persuasion towards the Muslims using a new formula . Even if this was not a product of his persuasion it has become a tangible reality. Professor Khalid Al-Sherif adds that by choosing the University of Cairo it showed recognition of Egypt's pioneering role in the Islamic world but Professor Khalid remains committed to parts of the speech.
Obama will not be able to achieve the things he spoke about in his speech
Meanwhile, Dr. Adel Mohamed and Professor Issam Amara both agreed that Obama faces a tough dilemma which his predecessor, George Bush, got caught up in. It is his commitment to what he spoke about in light of Israel's obvious stubbornness and the U.S.'s support for this policy through the Zionist lobby groups that support Israel. This was seen in particular when Obama, himself, talked about the Jewish Holocaust without mentioning the Palestinians who are killed on a daily basis though he did acknowledge their displacement and suffering.
The rights of Egyptian Copts, and America's relationship with Israel
Professor Abdul Aziz Imam said that Obama made a brief reference to the Christian minorities living in the Islamic world. Between the lines of his speech there were threats against anyone who would harm them. This was evident when he mentioned Lebanon as warning sign to Hezbollah who he implied here, and Iran. He also mentioned Egypt, making clear America's support for the Egyptian Copts even though he noted that the Christian minorities practice their religious ceremonies in freedom mentioning here Indonesia as an example. Meanwhile Ragab El-Shafei and Gamal Mohamed both said that Obama would support the Jews in view of the fact that he recognises their right to defend themselves and that he rejects the Palestinian resistance. Nonetheless in his speech he did not recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Obama talked about two states but will that come about seeing that he emphasised that the relationship between Israel and the U.S. was non-negotiable.
The difference between Obama’s character and U.S. policy
Egyptians overseas spoke at length about their admiration for the man’s character that had begun to understand what was happening. Obama cited Islamic events like the story of Isra and recounted Islamic history. According to Dr. Syed Mahmud, Obama was convincing and spoke about the Holy Koran seven times clarifying the meaning of some verses such as "and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people" and, "we have made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another." Some of the Egyptian expats, among them Professor Mohammed El-Shafei and Captain Yasser Ismail, talked about how they were overwhelmed by the U.S. President who talked frankly about all the issues and is determined to improve America’s image. Obama said he would stop Israel’s stubbornness. He said that they would continue to be optimistic; the closing of Guantanamo prison and the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq would confirm this.
Obama tried to gain the trust of young Muslims and control the emotions of the Arab people
Professor Amir al-Hassan stated that the U.S. President presented his role carefully in his speech and with an objective. The speech seemed to have been written with the utmost dexterity. He presented and stage managed things in such a legendary manner to control the hearts of Muslims making an effort to change the emotional mindset of Muslims. Evidence of that was when Obama talked about his childhood and his Muslim origin - in spite of referring to himself as a Christian - saying he used to hear the dawn prayers. He added that he wanted there to be peace and unity between the different faiths as there should be between the children of Abraham - referring here to Muslims, Jews and Christians. He reinforced that by mentioning the prayer in the Isra story and the prophets Moses, Jesus and Mohammed, peace be upon them. He also emphasised that at the opening of his speech with “as-Salaam alaykum” (peace be upon you) greeting and “shukran” (thanks) at the close of it. Despite Professor al-Hassan’s pessimistic view his friends made no secret of their true desire that Obama would be sincere, that he could change their attitudes and they might be wrong about him.
The implementation of that remains on the ground
Obama’s speech was divided into two large sections, the first section calling for rebuilding relations between America and the West. Here he spoke about true images and stereotypical images along with the importance of tolerance and forgetting the past. He called for a change in the way Arabs view America and the way Americans view the Arabs. He said they had to put aside the view that says that America seeks to control the Arabs and fight the Muslims. Obama indicated that there had to be a renunciation of violence and extremism and a strong bias towards diplomacy. The second section contained seven points about issues of tension: the Palestinians, Israel, Iran's nuclear weapons, democracy, religious freedom, women and economic development. It seemed that Obama, who offered his work plan to the Muslim world for the coming future, when he chose Egypt with its history, its position, its symbolic secularism, its non-fundamental form of Islam, wanted to say to the Muslim world that America had changed of its own accord and its policy. Is this to be believed or will Obama be just a different stage in the fixed American policy towards the Muslims? If this Christian leader is from Muslim roots he is just a new face on old currency.”

Just posted a reaction from Rosina Hassoun on my blog with her reactions as an Arab American to the Obama Cairo speech. She recognized the "historicalness" of an American president actually acknowledging mistakes being made in regards to the Arab world but then quickly recognizes the entrenched opinions of many groups & that Obama alone will not change things. I like his positivity — the way he addressed the pros of Islam instead of the cons was a great and very logical way to start off. The way Islam is portrayed in the media right now is very one-sided and President Obama managed to acknowledge the distinction between extremism and Islam.
Now, this is very important and is something that was not touched upon by the Bush administration. Ever since 9/11 Islam has been portrayed in a very negative light, as the religion of terrorism, and no one had managed to change or at least begin to work on changing that view, until today.

speaking of democracy and America’s stance on human rights, Obama manages to include all countries except the one we live in. Hasn’t he been notified that Egypt hides behind the label democracy but is in fact a dictatorship? If it’s obvious to a blind man then why didn’t he address this concern to us? For example Morocco, it deals with non-Muslims on daily bases on terms of trade , banking, exportation, importation, communication, computer, knowledge, technology, and also tourism. And, you trust the people who do your business well. Trust these days is not personal.
There is social trust, as I define it myself, that comes through the law. If there is an agreement with him, so you are stick with the agreement and you also, and trust is created on contractual bases and mutual relationship.
The mistake with the Palestinians and the Arabs is that when they negotiate the Palestinian question is the absence of contractual agreements and trust.
We are not telling Obama, you are our leader. We will tell him, yes we accept your idea, and we have to work together. I think now that the burden is on the Arabs. We talked, so you have to do it.
