Kuwaiti women granted passport rights and freedom to travel
Kuwait’s highest constitutional court has scrapped an article in the 1962 Passport Act, granting women the right to obtain a passport and freedom to travel without a husband’s consent.
A lawsuit filed by a Kuwaiti woman, who claimed her husband denied her and their children the right to travel, sparked the ruling, which according to the court, violated women’s rights to personal freedom and gender equality.
According to MP Aseel al-Awadhi, who is one of Kuwait’s first four women elected to the country’s National Assembly in May, the ruling upholds the principles of Kuwait’s constitution.

Original English comment:
The decision came after a Kuwaiti woman complained that her husband had refused to give her and their three children their passports and other personal identification documents so he could prevent them from leaving the country.

The court said in the ruling that the article was in violation of a number of provisions in the constitution which guarantee personal freedom and gender equality.
